Sonderkommando Lange and Nazi Euthanasia in Soldau (Działdowo)
In the letter of 19 October, 1940, the Higher SS and Police Leader of the Warthegau, Wilhelm Koppe, discloses to his counterpart in East Prussia, Jakob Sporrenberg, that “the so-called Sonderkommando Lange…evacuated 1,558 sick individuals from the transit camp in Soldau” in the period from May 21 to June 8, 1940. Koppe mentions that Sporrenberg’s predecessor, Wilhelm Rediess, had previously agreed “at that time that an amount of RM 10.- should be paid for the evacuation of each sick person”. At the beginning of the operation, the “leader of Sonderkommando Lange, Kriminalkommissar Lange, took an advance of RM 2,000.- from the Inspector of the Security Police and the SD in Königsberg”. Koppe then requests that Sporrenberg transfers “the remaining amount of RM 13,580”. The document provides insight into the administrative and logistical aspects of early Nazi extermination operations, particularly how they managed and funded the tasks involved SS and police units.

Betrifft: Kosten des Sonderkommandos Lange
Das mir für besondere Aufgaben unterstellte sogenannte Sonderkommando Lange war in der Zeit vom 21.5. bis 8.6.1940 gemäß der mit dem Reichssicherheitshauptamt getroffenen Absprache nach Soldau in Ostpreussen abkommandiert und hat während dieser Zeit vom Durchgangslager Soldau aus 1 558 Kranke evakuiert.
Ich habe von hier aus mit SS-Gruppenführer Rediess damals vereinbart, dass für die Evakuierung eines jeden Kranken von dort ein Betrag von RM 10.- zu zahlen sei. Es würde sich demnach um eine Summe von RM 15 580.- handeln, die gemäß der getroffenen Absprache auf das Konto des SS-Oberabschnitts Warthe überwiesen werden sollte.
Der Führer des Sonderkommandos Lange, Krim.-Kommissar Lange, hat nach seiner Mitteilung bei Beginn seiner Tätigkeit in Soldau von dem Inspekteur der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD in Königsberg, SS-Oberführer Dr. Rasch zur Bestreitung seiner laufenden Ausgaben einen Vorschuss von RM 2000,- genommen.
Ich darf daher bitten, diesen Betrag von RM 2 000.- unmittelbar an den Inspekteur der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD in Königsberg zu erstatten und den Restbetrag von RM 13 580.- an den SS-Oberabschnitt Warte zu überwiesen.

Subject: Costs of the Sonderkommando Lange
The so-called Sonderkommando Lange, which was under my command for special tasks, was dispatched to Soldau in East Prussia from May 21 to June 8, 1940, according to the arrangement made with the Reich Security Main Office, and evacuated 1,558 sick individuals from the transit camp in Soldau during this period.
I had agreed with SS-Gruppenführer Rediess at that time that an amount of RM 10.- should be paid for the evacuation of each sick person from there. Accordingly, a sum of RM 15,580.- would be involved, which, according to the agreement made, should be transferred to the account of the SS Upper Section Warthe.
The leader of Sonderkommando Lange, Kriminalkommissar Lange, took an advance of RM 2,000.- from the Inspector of the Security Police and the SD in Königsberg, SS-Oberführer Dr. Rasch, at the beginning of his work in Soldau to cover his ongoing expenses.
I would therefore ask you to reimburse this amount of RM 2,000.- directly to the Inspector of the Security Police and the SD in Königsberg, and transfer the remaining amount of RM 13,580.- to the SS Upper Section Warthe.
