Introduction to Hans Staegemeir

Hans Staegemeir was forester of the area at Kulmhof extermination camp. He observed the activities of the Sonderkommando and shared his experiences with his superior, Heinrich May. Members of the Sonderkommando visited his forestry office to make telephone calls. Staegemeir also had the opportunity to visit the extermination site in the forest camp. He is referenced in May’s detailed report from February 1945 regarding Kulmhof.

Staegemeir was born on March 8, 1889, in Silesia as the son of a forester. After completing his education at forestry school, he served in forestry roles across Silesia, West Prussia, and later, Westphalia. In August or September 1941, he was appointed as a district forester in the forestry office in Warthbrücken (today’s Kolo) in the Wartheland. He was entrusted with the management of the Ladau district, situated between Warthbrücken and Eichstädt , a responsibility he fulfilled until January or February 1943, when he was he was transferred to Burgstädt.
