Introduction
Memo by Topf & Söhne engineer Kurt Prüfer regarding a phone call with the SS-Wirtschafts-Verwaltungshauptamt (SS Economic and Administrative Main Office) on September 8, 1942. Prüfer reports that the Auschwitz concentration camp is planning for cremation ovens with a total oven capacity to incinerate 2,650 corpses per day. However, he notes that “this number of muffles is still not sufficient; we are to deliver more ovens as quickly as possible.”

Herr Obersturmführer Krone ruft an und erklärt, dass er zum Brigadeführer Kämmer bestellt sei und über seine Besichtigung des Krematoriums in Auschwitz, von der er gestern zurückgekehrt sei, zu berichten habe. Aus der Anlage in Auschwitz wäre er nicht klug geworden und wollte sich deshalb genau informieren, wieviel Muffeln dort zur Zeit in Betrieb seien, und wieviel Öfen mit Muffeln wir zur Zeit dort bauen und noch liefern.
Ich gab an, dass zur Zeit 3 Stück Zweimuffel-Öfen mit einer Leistung von 250 je Tag in Betrieb seien. Ferner wären jetzt in Bau 5 Stück Dreimuffel-
b.w.
Öfen mit einer täglichen Leistung von 800. Zum Versand kämen heute und in den nächsten Tagen die von Mogilew abgezweigten 2 Stück Achtmuffel-Öfen mit einer Leistung von je 800 täglich.
Herr K. erklärte, dass diese Anzahl von Muffeln noch nicht ausreichend sei; wir sollen noch weitere Öfen schnellstens liefern.
Es ist daher zweckmäßig, dass ich am Donnerstag Vormittag nach Berlin käme, um mit Herrn K. über weitere Lieferungen zu sprechen. Ich soll Unterlagen über Auschwitz mitbringen, damit nun endgültig einmal die dringenden Rufe verstummen würden.
Den Besuch für Donnerstag habe ich zugesagt.

Mr. Obersturmführer Krone called and stated that he had been summoned to Brigadeführer Kämmer and had to report on his inspection of the crematorium in Auschwitz, from which he had returned yesterday. He said he hadn’t been able to fully understand the facility in Auschwitz and wanted to be specifically informed about how many muffles (furnaces) were currently in operation there, and how many ovens with muffles we are currently building and still have to deliver.
I stated that 3 two-muffle ovens, with a capacity of 250 per day, are currently in operation. Additionally, 5 three-muffle ovens with a daily capacity of 800 are now under construction. Two eight-muffle ovens, with a daily capacity of 800 each, which were diverted from Mogilev, are to be shipped today and in the coming days.
Mr. K. explained that this number of muffles is still not sufficient; we are to deliver more ovens as quickly as possible.
It is therefore advisable that I come to Berlin on Thursday morning to discuss further deliveries with Mr. K. I am to bring documents concerning Auschwitz so that the urgent requests can finally be silenced once and for all.
I have confirmed the visit for Thursday.
