Introduction
This detachment order from SS Cavalry Regiment 1, issued on 1 August 1942, illustrates how Himmler’s order that “all Jews must be shot. Jewish women are to be driven into the swamps” was integrated into daily field operations. The document notes that Himmler’s instruction “regarding the shooting of Jews is not to be taken as a reprimand, since up to now there have been no Jews” in the area. It underscores the directive to patrol leaders: “no male Jew is to remain alive; no remnant family is to remain in the localities.”

Abteilungsbefehl Nr. 28.
1.) Feind:
a) Nichts Neues. Agenten und Freiwillige melden [Rot-]Armisten im Sumpfgebiet NO Chomsk.
b) Heutiges Ergebnis: Abt. Stab und Rest 4. Schw.: 249 Plünd[erer].4 Ergebnis der Schwadronen im nächsten Abt.-Ref.5
2.) Verbindung mit Reit. Abt. SS.-Kav.Rgt. 2 abgebrochen. Es wird versucht, dieselbe über Flügelschwadron herzustellen.
3.) Reit. Abt. setzt Auftrag in Abschnitt IV wie folgt fort:
1. Schw. – bereits mündlich durch Abt.Kdr. unterrichtet –: Südgrenze Trennungs-linie, Westgrenze heutige Ostgrenze und Verlängerung nach Norden bis Sporowskie-See. Ost- und halbe Südgrenze die Jasiolda. Von Motol die Straße nach Janow. Es kommt mir darauf an, daß Schwadron am 3.8. so schnell wie möglich als Abschnitt IV das Dreieck: Rgt. Trennungslinie – einschl. Ort Bussa – Ostgrenze, Abschnitt III und Flußlauf Motol befriedet, so daß ich möglichst in den Vormittagsstunden Schwadron nach Norden für den Kessel um den Sumpf ansetzen kann.
2. Schw. ohne 1 Zug tritt am 2.8. um 2 Uhr an und übernimmt die Sicherung desZehulanka-Abschnittes vom Nordufer Czarne–See–Waldrand. Einweisung erfolgt durch 3. Schwadron. Nicht erforderliche Teile treten bis auf weiteres zur 3. Schw. (Selbstverpflegung). Der heute durch Funk nach Chomsk befohlene Zug ohne 1. Gruppe wird von Abt. angehalten und übernimmt Sicherung der Seezunge Westufer Sporowskie – See – Südufer Czarne-See. Bei dieser Sicherungsaufgabe ist es zweckmäßig – falls es Gelände gestattet –, die feindwärts gelegenen Ortseingänge offen erscheinen zu lassen. Truppe, ausgezeichnet getarnt, kann den heraustretenden Feind vernichten. – Hstuf. Goertz verantwortlich für Sicherung.
3. Schw. erkundet und klärt den Wald nördlich Czarne-See von Westen und Norden mit linkem Flügel von Sieradowo – Zobajty – Chodaki – Zytlin. – Es kommt mir darauf an, daß am Abend des 2. 8. die 3. Schwadron ein Ausweichen des Feindes nach Norden aus den Sümpfen heraus verhindert. Abt. Stab mit Rest 4. Schw. u. 1. Gruppe 2. Schw. übernimmt Sicherung Linie Kletna – Sporowski – See. Hilfspolizei Chomsk und freiwillige Weißrussen treten am 3.8. an und werden mit Spähtruppe abgesessen aufklären (im Sumpfgebiet).
4.) Nachrichtenverbindung: Heute keine Beanstandung. Mehr Ergebnisse melden.
5.) Krank. Kraft. W. Halt. Pl.:9 Für 2. u. 3. Schw. keine Veränderung, für 1. wird Veränderung evtl. unmittelbar mitgeteilt.
6.) Parole vom 1./2. 8. 41 20 Uhr: Berlin.
7.) Abt.Gef.Stand wird am 2.8. vormittags nach Motol verlegt. Falls Gelände es zuläßt, befinde ich mich am 2.8. bei 3. Schwadron.
Allgemeines:
Der heut. Funkspruch des Kdr. betr. Judenerschießung soll nicht als Rüge gelten, da bisher in Dörfern keine Juden. Judendörfer bisher sämtlich im Gebiet des 2. Rgts. Ausnahme Bereska-Kartuska, wo 221. Div. dringend Juden für Herstellung Rollbahn benötigt. Trotzdem sind besonders Spähtruppführer nochmals schärfstens zu ermahnen. Es bleibt kein männl. Jude leben, keine Restfamilie i. d. Ortschaften.

1.) Enemy:
a) Nothing new. Agents and volunteers report Red Army soldiers in the swamp area northeast of Chomsk.
b) Today’s result: Detachment staff and remainder of 4th Squadron: 249 looters.
Results of the squadrons to follow in the next detachment report.
2.) Contact with the Riding Detachment, SS Cavalry Regiment 2 has been broken off. Attempts will be made to reestablish it via the flank squadron.
3.) The Riding Detachment continues its mission in Sector IV as follows:
1st Squadron – already informed verbally by the detachment commander –: Southern boundary: separation line; Western boundary: today’s eastern boundary and its extension northwards to Lake Sporowskie; Eastern and half of the southern boundary: the Jasiolda River; From Motol the road to Janów. It is important to me that on 3 August the squadron pacifies as quickly as possible, as Sector IV, the triangle: regimental separation line – including the village of Bussa – eastern boundary, Sector III, and the course of the Motol River, so that I can employ the squadron northwards in the morning hours for the encirclement around the swamp.
2nd Squadron, without 1st platoon, moves out on 2 August at 02:00 hours and takes over security of the Zehulanka sector from the northern shore of Lake Czarne to the forest edge. Orientation will be provided by the 3rd Squadron. Parts not required will, until further notice, be assigned to the 3rd Squadron (self-catering). The platoon ordered today by radio to Chomsk, without 1st group, will be held back by the detachment and will take over security of the lake peninsula, west shore of Lake Sporowskie – Lake Czarne southern shore. For this security task it is advisable – if the terrain permits – to leave the village entrances facing the enemy appearing open. The troops, excellently camouflaged, can annihilate the enemy as he emerges. – SS-Hauptsturmführer Goertz responsible for security.
3rd Squadron reconnoiters and clears the forest north of Lake Czarne from the west and north, with its left wing from Sieradowo – Zobajty – Chodaki – Zytlin. It is important to me that on the evening of 2 August the 3rd Squadron prevents the enemy from withdrawing northwards out of the swamps.
Detachment staff with the remainder of the 4th Squadron and 1st group of the 2nd Squadron takes over security of the line Kletna – Lake Sporowski. Auxiliary police from Chomsk and Belarusian volunteers will move out on 3 August and will conduct dismounted reconnaissance with the scouting troop (in the swamp area).
4.) Communications: No complaints today. Report further results.
5.) Sick / horses / ammunition / rations: For the 2nd and 3rd Squadrons, no change; for the 1st, any changes will be communicated immediately if necessary.
6.) Password for the night of 1/2 August, 20:00 hours: Berlin.
7.) The detachment command post will be moved to Motol on the morning of 2 August. If the terrain allows, I will be with the 3rd Squadron on 2 August.
General:
Today’s radio message from the commander regarding the shooting of Jews is not to be taken as a reprimand, since up to now there have been no Jews in the villages. Jewish villages so far have been entirely in the area of the 2nd Regiment. The exception is Bereska-Kartuska, where the 221st Division urgently needs Jews for the construction of a supply road. Nevertheless, patrol leaders in particular are to be admonished again in the sharpest terms: no male Jew is to remain alive, no remnant family is to remain in the localities.
