1941-08-26 / Telex from HSSPF South: 1269 Jews Shot by SS and Police Units

Introduction

Telex from the Higher SS and Police Leader (HSSPF) Russia South, Friedrich Jeckeln, to the Kommando Stab RF-SS, dated 26 August 1941. The situation report records that the 1st SS Brigade reported “82 Jews shot,” Police Regiment South reported “549 Jews shot,” Police Battalion 314 recorded “69 Jews shot,” and the staff company of the HSSPF reported “546 Jews shot.” Taken together, the figures in the telex amount to the reported shooting of 1,269 Jews.

Vermerk der FS-Stelle: Laut Rückfrage beim Führer des umstehenden FS (R R VST zu Absatz 1) soll das Wort hinter Beridtschew tatsächlich e l s t e heißen und soll angeblich ein Ortsname sein. Vermutlich ist dies ein Irrtum und soll wohl 1. SS-Brigade heißen.

2.) Activities: 1st SS Brigade securing the left flank of the Russian 10511th Army Corps, without change. Police Regiment South deployed in railway security service without change.

3.) Results: 1st SS Brigade takes 42 prisoners, shoots 82 Jews, and captures 2 guns, 3 heavy machine guns, and 5 light machine guns. The enemy continues to withdraw while burning down localities. Police Regiment South captures 1 paratrooper. 549 Jews shot. Battalion 314: 69 Jews shot. Staff company of the HSSPF: 546 Jews shot.

Note by the teleprinter station: According to an inquiry to the commander of the adjacent teleprinter station (R R VST regarding paragraph 1), the word following “Berditschew” is indeed supposed to read elste and is allegedly a place name. It is probably an error and is more likely meant to read “1st SS Brigade.”
