Introduction
In this radio communication dated 3 October 1941, intercepted by British intelligence, the Higher SS and Police Leader Posen, Wilhelm Koppe, asked for Himmler’s decision to “dispatch Sonderkommando Lange with appropriate aparatus to clear three asylums near Novgorod” in occupied Northwest Russia. This request followed an initiative by Hans Hefelmann from the Chancellery of the Führer. The Army High Command offered to provide logistical support by sending “a Ju 52 to Posen on the morning of October 5th so that Krimiminal-Kommissar Lange with approximately 5 employees can promptly begin his work”.

Auf Befehl Sturmbannführer BRANDT gebe ich folgendes Fs. zur Entscheidung Rf SS durch KONRAD, Scharführer. “SSD Posen B d O Nr 36. Geheim. An Rf SS, Sonderzug Heinrich; soeben rief mit [richtig: mich] dem Oberarzt FREYBERG vom Oberkdo des Heeres auf Veranlassung von Ltnt. HEFELMANN Kanzlei des Führers an, und bat darum zur Ausräumung von 3 Ihren Anstalten bei NOWGOROD an Ilmen-See ein Sonderkdo LANGE mit entsprechender Reparatur [richtig: Aparatur] nach dort zu entsenden. Oberarzt FREYBERG erklärte sich bereit am 5. Oktober vormittags ein JU 52 nach Posen zu schicken, damit Krim.kommissar Lange mit etwa 5 Mitarbeitern seine Tätigkeit umgehend aufnimmt. Oberarzt FREYBERG wies auf die dringende Notwendigkeit des sofortigen Eintreffens hin, da die Insassen schwer Ruhrkrank sind und die Truppe die Anstalten als Quartiere dringend benötigt. Ich bitte um Entscheidung des RF SS, ob nach Lage der Dinge eine Entsendung des Sonderkommandos Lange nach NOWGOROD in Frage kommt. Fuer umgehende Mitteilung wäre ich dankbar, da gegebenenfalls noch einige Vorbereitungen für diese Aktion erforderlich sind.

“SSD Posen B d O No. 36. Secret. To Reichsführer-SS, Special Train Heinrich;
Just now, Oberarzt FREYBERG from the Oberkommando des Heeres, at the instigation of Ltnt. HEFELMANN, Chancellery of the Führer, called me and requested the dispatch of a Sonderkommando LANGE with appropriate repairs [means: equipment] to clear 3 of their asylums near NOWGOROD on Lake Ilmen. Oberarzt FREYBERG agreed to send a Ju 52 to Posen on the morning of October 5th so that Krimiminal-Kommissar Lange with approximately 5 employees can promptly begin his work. Oberarzt FREYBERG emphasized the urgent need for immediate arrival, as the inmates are severely afflicted with dysentery, and the troops urgently require the establishments as quarters. I request a decision from the Reichsführer-SS as to whether, given the circumstances, dispatching the Sonderkommando Lange to NOWGOROD is feasible. I would be grateful for prompt notification, as some preparations may still be necessary for this operation.
