Introduction
Report of SS-Untersturmführer Fritz Ertl, dated August 21, 1942 about a meeting with engineers Kurt Prüfer and Robert Köhler in Auschwitz from August 19 and 20, 1942. The report discusses the “installation of two 3-muffle ovens at the bathing installations for special actions”, an euphemism for the Bunker extermination sites.

Betr.: Anwesenheit von Obering. Prüfer der Fa. Topf u. Söhne Erfurt, bezüglich der Einäscherungsanlagen im K.G.L. Auschwitz
Vorgang: Herr Ing. Prüfer sprach am 19.8.1942 um 14,00 Uhr bei hiesiger Dienststelle vor, um über den Einbau von 5 Stück 3 Muffel-Einäscherungsöfn im Krematorium des K.G.L. und Neuanlage von 2 Stück 3 Muffelöfen in einfacher Bauweise lt. Plan Nr. D 59 – 570 und Nr. D 59 599 die erfordlichen Einzelheiten zu besprechen.
Hierbei wurde folgendes festgelegt:
1.) Spätestens 26. August – 27. August trifft der Monteur Holik aus Buchenwald hier ein, der Monteur Koch in ca. 14 Tagen. Mit dem Aufbau der 5 Stück 3 Muffelöfen im K.G.L. wird sofort begonnen. Die Fa. Köhler Kyslowitz führt die Ausmauerung der Öfen und Füchse, sowie die Errichtung des Schornsteines lt. Plänen und Angaben der Fa. Topf u. Söhne durch.
2.) Bezüglich Aufstellung von je 2 Dreimuffelöfen bei den “Badeanstalten für Sonderaktionen” wurden von Ing. Prüfer vorgeschlagen, die Öfen aus einer bereits fertiggestellten Lieferung nach Mogilev abzuzweigen und wurde sogleich der Dienststellenleiter welcher beim SS-Wirtschaftsverwaltungshauptamt in Berlin anwesend war, hiervon tel. in Kenntnis gesetzt und gebeten das weitere veranlassen zu wollen.
3.) Bezüglich Errichtung eines 2. Krematoriums mit 5 Dreimuffelöfen, sowie Be- und Enlüftungsanlagen muß erst das Ergebnis der bereits laufenden Verhandlungen mit dem Reichssicherheitshauptamt bezügl. Zuteilung von Kontingente abgewartet werden.
4.) Nach Auschwitz wurden von der Fa. Topf u. Söhne irrtümlich die Teile eines Doppelmuffel-Einäscherungsofens gesandt, welche jedoch für Mauthausen bestimmt waren. Ing. Prüfer schlug vor, den Ofen hier zur Aufstellung zu bringen. Die fehlenden 2 Einführungen und 2 Ascheentnahmetüren können inzwischen der Lieferung der 5 Drei-Muffel-Einäscherungsöfen entnommen werden.

5.) Die Schäden in dem neu gemauerten Schornstein für das bestehende Krematorium wurden gemeinsam mit Herrn Köhler und SS-Unterscharführer Kirschnek besichtigt und die zu ergreifenden Maßnahmen besprochen. Da das Schornsteinfutter infolge der großen Hitze arbeitet, muß es oben frei durchgehen und darf nicht mit dem Außenmantel fest verbunden sein.
6.) Am Donnerstag den 20. August 1942 wurde gemeinsam mit SS-Strm. Janisch u. Herrn Köhler die Baustelle des 5 Dreimuffelofens im K.G.L. besichtigt, und die erforderlichen Einzelheiten besprochen.
7.) Ing. Prüfer bat um schriftlichen Auftrag über die Lieferung der 2 Stück 3 Muffel- und den Doppelmuffel-Einäscherungsofen, sowie um baldige Mitteilung, ob die Öfen der Lieferung Mogilew abgezweigt werden können.

8.) Zum Transport des fehlenden Schamotts- und sonstigen Materials sind der Fa. Topf u. Söhne sogleich 10 Frachtbriefe einzusenden.

Subject: Presence of Senior Engineer Prüfer from the company Topf & Sons Erfurt, regarding the cremation facilities at the POW camp Auschwitz.
Issue: Mr. Engineer Prüfer appeared at this office on 19 August 1942 at 14:00 to discuss the necessary details regarding the installation of five 3-muffle cremation ovens in the crematorium of the POW camp and the construction of two new 3-muffle ovens in a simplified design, according to plan No. D 59-570 and No. D 59-599.
The following was agreed upon:
1.) The fitter Holik from Buchenwald will arrive here no later than 26 August – 27 August, and fitter Koch will arrive in about 14 days. Construction of the five 3-muffle ovens in the POW camp will begin immediately. The company Köhler Kyslowitz will carry out the brickwork of the ovens and flues, as well as the construction of the chimney, according to the plans and specifications of Topf & Sons.
2.) Regarding the installation of two 3-muffle ovens at the “bathing installations for special actions”, Engineer Prüfer proposed redirecting the ovens from a delivery already completed for Mogilev. The head of the office, who was present at the SS Economic and Administrative Main Office in Berlin, was informed of this by phone and was asked to make the necessary arrangements.
3.) As for the construction of a second crematorium with five 3-muffle ovens and ventilation systems, the outcome of the ongoing negotiations with the Reich Security Main Office regarding the allocation of contingents must first be awaited.
4.) By mistake, the company Topf & Sons sent parts of a double-muffle cremation oven to Auschwitz, which were actually intended for Mauthausen. Engineer Prüfer suggested installing the oven here. The missing two inlets and two ash removal doors can be temporarily taken from the delivery of the five 3-muffle cremation ovens.

5.) The damage to the newly built chimney for the existing crematorium was inspected together with Mr. Köhler and SS-Unterscharführer Kirschnek, and the necessary measures were discussed. Since the chimney lining expands due to the intense heat, it must pass through the top freely and not be firmly connected to the outer casing.
6.) On Thursday, 20 August 1942, the construction site for the five 3-muffle ovens in the POW camp was inspected together with SS-Sturmmann Janisch and Mr. Köhler, and the required details were discussed.
7.) Engineer Prüfer requested a written order for the delivery of the two 3-muffle ovens and the double-muffle cremation oven, as well as a prompt notification on whether the ovens from the Mogilev delivery could be redirected.

8.) Ten shipping notes must immediately be sent to the company Topf & Sons for the transport of the missing firebricks and other materials.
