1945-05-04 / The Gerstein Report: SS Officers Account on the Machinery of Extermination

On 4 May 1945, Kurt Gerstein completed a report describing his curriculum vitae and his inspection trip as SS-to the Aktion Reinhard extermination camps of Belzec and Treblinka, which took place between 17 and 19 August 1942. In this report, Gerstein provided an account of the extermination process, including the operation of the gas chambers. According to his testimony, he was sent to the camps in his capacity as an expert in disinfestation, first to assist with the disinfection of textiles collected during Aktion Reinhard and, second, to convert the gas chambers from engine exhaust to prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide).

1945-02-11 / Globocnik Urges Promotion of SS Officer Involved in Operation Reinhard and “cleared Bialystok within five days”

A letter dated February 11, 1945, written by SS-Gruppenführer Odilo Globocnik—then Higher SS and Police Leader in the Adriatic Littoral—to SS-Obergruppenführer Maximilian von Herff, Chief of the SS Personnel Main Office, contains a plea for the promotion of his associate, Georg Michalsen, into the Waffen-SS Reserve with the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer. In support of Michalsen’s promotion, Globocnik highlights his service record, including his role in “Operation ‘R’ in an independent and decisive position, and for example, significantly influenced the heavy fighting in Warsaw and cleared Bialystok within five days.” Michalsen served as a staff member in Hermann Höfle’s department for “Jewish Affairs (Sonderaktion Reinhardt).” “Operation R” thus refers to Operation Reinhard – the systematic extermination of Jews in the Generalgouverment, carried out primarily through the extermination camps Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka.

1945-01-26 The Inspector of the Security Police and SD Düsseldorf on “Special Treatment” of Foreign Workers: “Discreetly, Including by Shooting”

In a directive dated January 26, 1945, SS-Standartenführer Walter Albath, Inspector of the Security Police and SD in Düsseldorf, issued orders to the Secret State Police Offices concerning the “special treatment” of foreign workers in Wehrkreis VI. Albath instructed that “requests for special treatment in a concentration camp should no longer be submitted” and authorized the State Police Offices to carry out such measures “discreetly, including by shooting.”
