Introduction
Situation report dated 13 January 1944 from the Commander of the Security Police and SD in Kovno. According to the report, on 25 December 1943, “64 laborers deployed at Fort IX as part of Operation 1005 B broke out”. Subsequent search operations resulted in the recapture of “37 of the escapees” of whom “5 were shot while fleeing”. The escape involved Jewish prisoners assigned to the Sonderkommando 1005 body-disposal site at Fort IX. The incident was later reported up the chain of command to Himmler, including discussion of how to deal with the guards held responsible.

Die Beendigung der Konzentrationsmassnahmen sollte nach dem letzten Bericht noch im Laufe des Monates Dezember erfolgen. Insbesondere sollte bis dahin die Aussonderung der nicht arbeitsfähigen Juden aus dem KL Kauen beendet sein. Der Kommandant des KL Kauen hat jedoch erklärt, dass vorläufig im Interesse eines ruhigen Aufbaues des KL und der vorgeschobenen Aussenlage eine vorzeitige Wegnahme der nicht arbeitsfähigen Juden nicht infrage käme und er sich persönlich die Festsetzung des Termins vorbehalte.
In den Abendstunden des 25.12.1943 brachen 64 im Fort IX eingesetzte Arbeitskräfte des Unternehmens 1005 B aus, ohne dass die Flucht zunächst bemerkt wurde. Im Zuge der sofort eingeleiteten Fahndungen gelang es bisher, insgesamt 37 der Flüchtlinge wieder zu erfassen, wovon 5 auf der Flucht erschossen wurden.

Die litauische Widerstandsbewegung bemüht sich weiterhin, jede Unterstützung des Deutschen Reiches durch Litauer zu sabotieren. Die Hetzschriftenpropaganda wendet sich sowohl gegen den Arbeitseinsatz im Reich als auch ganz besonders gegen die Bemühungen pflichtbewusster litauischer Kreise, eine litauische Division zum Kampf gegen den Bolschewismus aufzustellen. Dabei wird immer wieder die Forderung nach Unabhängigkeit erhoben. Demgegenüber ist nach wie vor die Furcht vor einer Rückkehr der Bolschewisten gross. Im Zusammenhang hiermit wird festgestellt, dass viele Litauer sich legal und illegal Waffen beschaffen.

According to the latest report, the completion of the concentration measures was to take place during the course of the month of December. In particular, the separation of Jews unfit for work from the Kaunas concentration camp was to be completed by then. However, the commandant of the Kaunas concentration camp has stated that, for the time being, in the interest of the orderly development of the camp and the forward external situation, an early removal of Jews unfit for work could not be considered, and that he reserved the determination of the date personally.

The Lithuanian resistance movement continues to attempt to sabotage any support for the German Reich by Lithuanians. Its propaganda materials are directed both against labor deployment in the Reich and, in particular, against the efforts of dutiful Lithuanian circles to establish a Lithuanian division to fight against Bolshevism. In doing so, the demand for independence is repeatedly raised. At the same time, there remains a strong fear of a return of the Bolsheviks. In this connection, it is noted that many Lithuanians are acquiring weapons both legally and illegally.
