Introduction
On March 22, 1944, State Police office in Tilsit sent a report to the Commander of the Security Police and SD in Kaunas. The report concerns a group of Jewish forced laborers in Ponewesch / Ponewiesch (Latvian: Panevėžys) who had escaped from a work detail of District Commissioner on November 4, 1943. According to the document, “approximately 50 Jews in Panevėžys fled from external labor, and all but 15 Jews were recaptured and could be given special treatment”, i.e. they were killed.

Vertraulich wurde hier mitgeteilt, dass vor einiger Zeit etwa 50 Juden in Ponevezys von der Aussenarbeit geflüchtet waren und bis auf 15 Juden wieder festgenommen und sonderbehandelt werden konnten.
Auf Grund der Mitteilung sollen sich die noch flüchtigen Juden noch vor 3 Monaten in den Kellerräumen des Litauers Navickas in Ponevezys, Ramygalostr., versteckt gehalten haben. Als Zeuge wird der Litauer Rajackas, der in Ponevezys, Stetiskuisstrasse, wohnhaft ist, genannt.
Die in der Anlage beigefügte Skizze veranschaulicht die Lage der Wohnungen der in vorliegender Angelegenheit genannten Litauer.

It has been confidentially reported here that some time ago approximately 50 Jews in Ponevezh fled from external labor, and that all but 15 Jews were recaptured and could be given special treatment.
According to this information, the Jews who are still at large are said to have been hiding, as recently as three months ago, in the basement rooms of the Lithuanian Navickas in Ponevezh, Ramygalos Street. As a witness, the Lithuanian Rajackas, who resides in Ponevezys, Stetiskis Street, is named.
The sketch enclosed with this report illustrates the location of the residences of the Lithuanians mentioned in this matter.
