Introduction
In correspondence dated September 5, 1944 SS-Standartenführer Wolfram Sievers discusses the fate of Nazi’s “Jewish skeleton collection” housed in Strasbourg’s anatomy institute. As Allied forces advanced, Sievers requested a decision from the Personal Staff of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler on whether to preserve or “dissolve” the collection. He noted to Rudolf Brandt that one “can proceed with defleshing the bodies, thereby rendering them unrecognizable, but this would make much of the overall work pointless and result in a major scientific loss for this unique collection”. By October 1944, SS-Hauptsturmführer Bruno Beger claimed to Brandt that the collection had been “completely dissolved”.

Betr.: Jüdische Skelettsammlung
Gemäß Vorschlag vom 9.2.42 und dortiger Zustimmung vom 23.2.42 AR/493/37 wurde durch SS-Sturmbannführer Professor Hirt die bisher fehlende Skelettsammlung angelegt. Infolge Umfang der damit verbundenen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit sind Skelettierungsarbeiten noch nicht abgeschlossen. Hirt erbittet im Hinblick auf etwa erforderlichen Zeitaufwand für 80 Stück Weisungen, falls mit Bedrohung Strassburgs zu rechnen ist, wegen der Behandlung der im Leichenkeller der Anatomie befindlichen Sammlung. Er kann Entfleischung und damit Unkenntlichmachung vornehmen, dann allerdings Gesamtarbeit teilweise umsonst und grosser wissenschaftlicher Verlust für diese einzigartige Sammlung, weil danach Hominiabgüsse nicht mehr möglich wären. Skelettsammlung als solche nicht auffällig. Weichteile würden deklariert als bei Übernahme Anatomie durch Franzosen hinterlassene alte Leichenreste und zur Verbrennung gegeben. Erbitte Entscheidung zu folgenden Vorschlägen:
1.) Sammlung kann erhalten bleiben
2.) Sammlung ist teilweise aufzulösen
3.) Sammlung ist im Ganzen aufzulösen.

Bei seiner Anwesenheit auf der Feld-Kommandostelle am 21.10.1944 teilte mir SS-Standartenführer Sievers mit, daß die Sammlung in Straßburg mittlerweile entsprechend der damals gegebenen Weisung schon völlig aufgelöst sei. Er ist der Ansicht, daß diese Regelung in Anbetracht der ganzen Lage die beste wäre.

Subject: Jewish Skeleton Collection
In accordance with the proposal of 9 February 1942 and the approval granted on 23 February 1942 (AR/493/37), the previously missing skeleton collection was created by SS-Sturmbannführer Professor Hirt. Due to the scope of the associated scientific work, the skeletonization processes have not yet been completed. In view of the time still required for 80 specimens, Hirt requests instructions in case Strasbourg is under threat, regarding how to handle the collection located in the anatomy institute’s morgue.
He can proceed with defleshing the bodies, thereby rendering them unrecognizable, but this would make much of the overall work pointless and result in a major scientific loss for this unique collection, as plaster casting of the corpses would no longer be possible afterward. The skeleton collection itself would not attract attention. The soft tissue remains would be declared as old corpses left behind in the anatomy department after the French takeover and would be handed over for incineration.
A decision is requested on the following proposals:
1.) The collection may be preserved.
2.) The collection is to be partially dissolved.
3.) The collection is to be completely dissolved.

During his presence at the field command post on October 21, 1944, SS-Standartenführer Sievers informed me that the collection in Strasbourg had by now already been completely dissolved in accordance with the directive issued at the time. He is of the opinion that, given the overall situation, this arrangement was the best possible.
